Wood vs. Foam vs. Cork: Does Your Yoga Block Material Matter?
Most studios provide yoga blocks. Convenient—but think about how many people have used them.
Bare feet, sweaty skin, studio floors, body oils and microorganisms all come into contact with shared equipment. After hundreds of uses, worn studio blocks can become like giant bacterial sponges, passed from one person to the next.
Your yoga mat is personal. Why shouldn’t your block be?
Foam: Cheap & Disposable
Most foam blocks are made from EVA, a synthetic polymer. They’re lightweight and inexpensive, but they compress, dent, scratch and eventually wear out. Once damaged, those surfaces can also become more difficult to thoroughly clean.
When they're worn out, you replace them.
Cork: Natural, But Not Solid
Cork is a more natural alternative, but most cork blocks are made from cork granules bonded together, not one solid piece.
They're firm and grippy, but cork is porous and can chip, roughen and crumble with use.
Hardwood: Buy It Once
Somatic Craft™ Body Blocks are made from solid hardwood.
No foam. No compressed cork. No disposable synthetic block.
Hardwood provides a firm, stable surface that doesn't compress beneath you. A properly finished block is easy to maintain and can even be refinished after years of use.
With proper care, it can last decades—potentially a lifetime.
